Carlos Alcaraz is a well-known figure in his native Spain and now his name is being used in official university exams.

The University of Murcia, which is the region where Alcaraz is from, has written a question based on how many points Alcaraz has won for their Baccalaureate Assessment for University Access (EBUA) exam. The test is mandatory for students with a Baccalaureate degree or similar qualifications who want to access university.

According to Madrid-based sports publication Relevo, the question on Alcaraz was worth two-and-a-half marks in the exam. The question asked was the following:-

In the years 2022 and 2023, Carlitos Alcaraz won a total of 10 tournaments in the Grand Slam, Masters 1000 and ATP 500 categories, which gave him a total of 10,000 points. The number of tournaments won in the ATP 500 category was one more than the half of the sum of the number of tournaments won in the two other categories.

The following table details the points achieved for each tournament won in each of the categories:

Grand Slam=2,000 points
Masters 1000= 1,000 points
ATP500= 500 points

With this information, calculate the number of tournaments in each of the three categories won by Carlitos in the years 2022 and 2023.

The University of Murcia currently has a student population of more than 30,000. They currently offer 54 degrees, 70 Master’s programmes and 36 PhDs.

Alcaraz, who is currently ranked third in the world, is set to play his semi-final match against Jannik Sinner at the French Open on Friday. The Spaniard is bidding to claim his third major title at the age of 21. Should he do so, he would become only the third active player to have won a Grand Slam trophy on three different surfaces after Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
