Novak Djokovic has admitted he had to take a ‘difficult decision’ in taking surgery as he posted an update to his fans on social media.

The world number one was forced to withdraw from his quarter-final with Casper Ruud after suffering meniscus damage in his fourth round clash with Francisco Cerundolo.

Djokovic complained about the state of the courts as he slipped on two occasions in his five set win over the Argentinian.

However scans showed the damage was too much for Djokovic to continue as he was forced to withdraw from the tournament.

There was no time wasted though for Djokovic as the next day he had surgery on the injury as he aims for a quick recovery.

Posting an update on Instagram Djokovic said he had to make difficult decisions over the last couple of days, “In the past day, I had to make some tough decisions after sustaining a meniscus tear during my last match,” Djokovic explained on Instagram.

“I’m still processing it all but I am happy to update you that the surgery went well. I am so appreciative of the team of doctors who have been by my side, as well as the overwhelming support I have received from my fans. I’m going to do my best to be healthy and fit to return to the court as soon as possible.

“My love for this sport is strong and the desire to compete at the highest level is what keeps me going.”

It’s unclear how significant the surgery was as it can take between 3 weeks-6 months to recover.

However it’s understood that it was a minor surgery which would mean Djokovic may have to miss Wimbledon but could still be in contention for a return to Paris for the Olympic Games.

The tennis event at the Olympic Games start on the 27th of July and conclude on the 4th of August.
