Andy Murray has revealed that he is considering playing doubles with Jamie Murray at Wimbledon this year.
The news came after Andy Murray’s doubles defeat at Roland Garros alongside Dan Evans.
The British duo put up a valiant effort in tough conditions but ultimately fell short in two tiebreaks to Sebastian Baez and Thiago Seyboth Wild.
After the match Murray said that they used Roland Garros to see whether him and Evans would work well ahead of the Olympics selection but obviously it didn’t turn out that way, “Well, so what’s going to happen with that, I guess for both of us, it was kind of an opportunity to, I don’t know, put our names in the frame to play the Olympics and stuff,” Murray explained.
“That’s why it was a lot of, I think, pretty strong doubles event this year, a lot of singles guys playing ahead of the Olympics. You know, I think me and Dan obviously were hoping to have a good run here.
“Yeah, it wasn’t to be. So don’t know if we’ll get the opportunity. There’s guys obviously ahead of us in the rankings, and we’ve got good doubles players in the UK. Yeah, let’s see what happens. Yeah, it was an opportunity to have a good run and didn’t happen.”
This year’s Olympics will take place in Paris and the tennis event will be at Roland Garros so this was a golden opportunity for Murray and Evans to establish themselves as a pairing for the Olympics but it wasn’t to be.
However Murray’s quest at playing doubles at Grand Slams isn’t over yet as the former Wimbledon champion may decide to play doubles at SW19 with his brother Jamie.
Jamie Murray isn’t playing the grass court season with his regular partner Michael Venus which could open up the opportunity for an incredible doubles event in what could be Andy’s final ever Wimbledon.
Speaking in his press conference Murray stated that conversations had taken place about the possibility, “I may do, yeah. I’m not 100% sure yet. My brother doesn’t have a partner for Wimbledon currently. We have spoken a little bit about it. So may do that, but not 100% sure yet,” Murray claimed.
“I mean obviously Jamie, I mean, he could also get a good partner, as well. We’ll see what happens, but yeah, we’ll probably decide in the next few days probably.”
Wimbledon takes place from the 1st of July.
