World number one Novak Djokovic has assured fans that he is fine after being hit by a water bottle in Rome.

The incident happened after Djokovic’s 6-3 6-1 victory over Corentin Moutet in order to progress to the third round in Rome.

However the Serb’s dominant victory was not the main talking point as it was what happened afterwards that has taken the main headlines.

The six-time champion was signing autographs when he was struck by a water bottle near the exit of the court.

At first it looked like it was thrown towards Djokovic but another angles showed that it was an accident as the bottle slipped out of a fans bag and hit the Serb on the head as shown below.

A statement from the tournament detailed the incident and that it would be investigated, “Novak Djokovic on leaving the Central court at the end of his match was accidentally hit on the head by a water bottle while signing autographs to spectators,” the tournament said on X (Twitter).

“He underwent appropriate medication and has already left the Foro Italico to return to his hotel; his condition is not a cause for concern.”

Furthermore Italian Federation spokesman Alessandro Catapano stated that Djokovic was upset by the incident, “He was upset, but he seems OK,” Catapano was quoted by Indian Express as saying.

“We’re also very upset about what happened and we are trying to figure out who it was and understand the dynamics. The police came and asked for information but the person who did it had already left.

“We’re going through all of the video and camera angles to see if we can determine what exactly happened.”

However Djokovic revealed a statement on social media stating that he is fine and will be ready for Sunday.

Djokovic will now aim to recover in time for Sunday’s clash against Chilean Alejandro Tabilo as he seeks to win a 1,100th ATP match of his career.
