Matteo Berrettini beat Lorenzo Sonego 6-3 7-6 (7-5) after 1 hour and 40 minutes in the all-Italian quarter final of the Grand Prix Hassan II in Marrakesh to reach his first semifinal on the ATP Tour since Naples in October 2022.
Berrettini saved the only break point he faced in the match. The 2021 Wimbledon finalist broke at 30 in the second game and served out the first set at 30.
Sonego saved two break points with a half-volley and after a forehand error from Berrettini in the third game of the second set.
Sonego fended off another break point at 2-2 with a first serve. Both players went on serve until the the 10th game, when Berrettini saved a set point at 4-5. Berrettini rallied from 15-30 down to hold serve at deuce in the 12th game. Berrettini earned a mini-break to take a 3-2 lead. Sonego pulled back on serve to draw level to 4-4. Berrettini sealed the win, when Sonego made a double fault on the match point.
Berrettini set up a semifinal match against Mariano Navone, who beat Aleksandar Vukic 6-4 6-2. Navone reached the final in Rio de Janeiro last February.
