Grigor Dimitrov has explained that experience and maturity have been the reasons for his recent form.

The older, the wiser is the motto for Dimitrov as he enters his 30’s having been through the pressures and expectations of the tour.

However age hasn’t haltered Dimitrov’s progress as the Bulgarian is having his best run of consistent form for a long time.

Having reached his first Masters 1000 final in a few years in Paris at the end of last year, Dimitrov broke his title drought in January by winning Brisbane.

This recent run of form has been a pleasant surprise for Dimitrov and the 32 year-old points to experience and maturity for his latest surge in form, “Outside the court, things are just as important,” Dimitrov told tennis.com.

“Connections with people, with friends, with family, with people that have maybe not served you right, but you understood the lesson maturing. All these things I feel bring a lot to it. For me, it’s been an incredible road I would say the past seven months outside of tennis.

“I’m also at the age where I think maturity comes in, experience comes in, the love for the sport kicks in more. You try to understand more of yourself, more of your surroundings, more of who you want to have around, the upside of certain things, the disappointment and how to handle things.”

The experience of going through tough periods has helped Dimitrov develop as he is entering one of the best periods of his career.

There was also comment from Dimitrov about his personality off the court and how that’s helped him to be the player he is today, “Everyone has a good heart and all that, but it’s also how you use it and to express yourself,” Dimitrov explains.

“I think for me, this part has always been very, very strong. I always wanted to keep that way with the risk of maybe getting on the wrong side of some people, and being judged.

“I’m okay with that, as long as I’m true to myself and true to my heart, and to the people that are around me. I think that itself already pushes you. It propels you to be a good person and it sets up very good and high standards for life.”

Dimitrov will now focus on the Mutua Madrid Open where he is the ninth seed as he improves his preparations for Roland Garros.

The Bulgarian will begin his campaign against Jakub Mensik on Thursday.
