Lorenzo Sonego beat world number 47 Miomir Kecmanovic 7-6 (7-1) 6-4 in 1 hour and 30 minutes to set up a second round match against former champion Cameron Norrie at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.
Both players went on serve with no break points until 5-5 in the first set. Kecmanovic held on serve at deuce in the fourth game to draw level to 2-2.
Kecmanovic earned the first break of the match in the 11th game to take a 4-3 lead after a forehand error from Sonego.
Sonego broke straight back in the 12th game with two forehand errors from Kecmanovic and a drop-shot to force the first set to the tie-break. Sonego earned three mini-breaks to win the tie-break 7-1.
The second set went on serve in the first three games. Sonego saved a break point in the fourth game before breaking serve in the fifth game with a forehand to take a 3-2 lead. Sonego earned two double break points in the seventh game but Kecmanovic saved them. Sonego served out the win on his first match point in the 10th game.
Tomas Machac beats 2017 Indian Wells finalist Stan Wawrinka 7-6 (7-3) 4-6 6-3.
Wawrinka broke serve in the fourth game of the first set to take a 3-1 lead. Machac broke straight back in the fifth game and held serve at 15 to draw level to 3-3. Machac earned his second break in the ninth game to take a 5-4 lead. Wawrinka broke straight back to draw level to 5-5. Machac earned two mini-breaks to win the tie-break 7-3.
Wawrinka broke serve at love in the first game of the second set to win the second set 6-4. Machac broke serve in the second game to take a 2-0 lead. Wawrinka broke straight back in the third game in the third game. Machac broke twice in the third and ninth games to win the third set 6-3. Machac won the final 10 points to improve to 2-0 in his two head-to-head matches against Wawrinka. Wawrinka committed 50 unforced errors.
Machac set up a second round match against Adrian Mannarino.
Gael Monfils cruised past Max Purcell 6-1 6-2 with two breaks of serve in each set in 70 minutes to win his first ATP Masters 1000 match win since Cincinnati. Monfils won 70% of his second serve return points.
Monfils set up a second round match against Hubert Hurkacz. Monfils and Hurkacz have drawn to 1-1 in their two head-to-head matches. They have not met since 2019.
