Andy Murray has withdrawn from the Monte Carlo Masters and Munich Open after suffering a serious ankle injury last week.
The former world No.1 is sidelined from the Tour for an unspecific length of time after pulling ligaments in his ankle during his 5-7, 7-5, 7-6(5), loss to Tomas Machac at the Miami Open. Murray has suffered a full rupture of his ATFL (anterior talofibular ligament) as well as a near full thickness rupture of his CFL (calcaneofibular ligament). The recovery time from such injuries can vary depending on the individual and surgery is an option for severe cases.
“Following consultation with his team and medical experts, Andy Murray has taken the decision to miss the Rolex Monte Carlo Masters and BMW Open Munich,” a statement from Murray’s team read.
“At this stage, it is still not clear how long Andy will be out of action, and he is continuing to review options with his medical team.
“Obviously this is disappointing news for Andy and he has reiterated his desire to get back on court as soon as possible.”
Murray’s chances of playing a clay event this season are shrinking and it appears a more likely option for him would be to get fully fit for the grass swing. As for the French Open, he has not played there since 2020 due to relations related to injuries and/or his desire to be fully ready for the grass swing.
Besides his injury woes, there is also uncertainty about how much longer Murray will continue his career after returning. Earlier this year, the four-time Grand Slam champion told reporters that he doesn’t intend ‘to play much play this summer.’ He has also said he wants to play at the Paris Olympics but only if he is in a situation where he can be a medal contender.
Murray, who has won 46 ATP titles during his career, is yet to publically comment on his ankle injury.
