Holger Rune took out Lorenzo Musetti 6-2 7-6 (7-5) in 96 minutes to reach the fourth round at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells for the first time. Rune won 82% of his first serve points.
Rune broke serve in the second game and held serve at love to open up a 3-0 lead. Musetti saved a double break point at 1-4. Rune earned his second break after a backhand error from Musetti in the eighth game to close out the first set 6-2.
Rune went up 40-0 on Musetti’s serve in the second game of the second set, but Musetti saved three break points to hold serve at deuce. The Italian player did not convert two break points in the third game. Neither player was able to create any break points in the next games en route to the tie-break. Musetti took a 5-4 lead in the tie-break, but Rune won three consecutive points to seal the tie-break 7-5.
Rune set up a Round of 16 match against Taylor Fritz or Sebastian Baez.
“I am trying to convert as many breaks as possible. I was a bit disappointed at the beginning of the second set. I thought I maybe could have done better on a few of those, but I have got to to learn from it. Tennis is about taking your chances. Whether you take them or not Is to decide the match most of the time, but I am happy I could keep composed and finish the tie-break in good form”, said Rune.
