Danil Medvedev beats Sebastian Korda to reach the fourth round in Indian Wells

Danil Medvedev took out Sebastian Korda 6-4 5-7 6-3 in 2 hours and 32 minutes to reach the fourth round at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. Medvedev converted 9 of his 22 break points and won 14 of his 21 net points. Korda converted seven of his nine break points and made 26 unforced errors. 

Medvedev broke twice in the third and fifth games to open up a 4-1 lead. Korda pulled one of the break points on his third opportunity in the sixth game for 2-4. Medvedev broke for the third game in the seventh game to race out to a 5-2 lead. Korda broke at 15 in the eighth game and held serve at deuce to reduce the gap to 4-5. Medvedev served out the first set at 15. 

Korda saved three break points in the first game of the second set, but dropped his serve at 15 in the third game. After three consecutive breaks both players drew level to 3-3. Korda held serve after two deuces for 5-4 in the ninth game. Korda broke serve at deuce from 0-40 down in the 12th game to win the second set 7-5. 

Medvedev did not convert two break points in the first game of the third set. Medvedev converted his fourth break point in the first game of the third set to take a 2-1 lead. It was the first of five consecutive breaks. Medvedev broke the pattern by holding serve to 15 in the eighth game for 5-3. Korda faced the 22th break point of the match and Medvedev converted it on his first match point. 

Medvedev is aiming to win his sixth title across all six hard-court ATP Masters 1000 tournaments after winning in Cincinnati 2019, Shanghai 2019, Paris Bercy 2020, Canada 2021 and Miami 2023. Medvedev can climb to number 2 in the ATP Ranking, if he wins the Indian Wells title and both Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz do not reach the semifinals. 

Medvedev drew level to 2-2 in his four head-to-head matches against Korda, who had beaten his Russian opponent at the Australian Open and Shanghai last season. 

Medvedev set up a quarter final match against Grigor Dimitrov, who beat Adrian Mannarino 6-3 6-3. Dimitrov broke serve in the fourth game and served out the first set 6-3 at deuce. The Bulgarian player converted his fourth break point in the fifth game of the second set to take a 3-2 lead. Mannarino saved three break points in the seventh game for 3-4. Dimitrov broke serve on his third match point in the ninth game.
