Andy Murray will be sidelined from the Tour for an ‘extended period’ after rupturing ligaments in his ankle during his third round clash at the Miami Open earlier this week.

The former world No.1 suffered the injury during his marathon clash with Tomas Machac that went on for more than three hours. Murray was trailing the final set 2-5 before clawing his way back. He hurt his ankle as he was serving to level at 5-5 and looked in considerable pain. The Brit underwent a medical time-out but continued playing without having any tape in the area.

Medical tests following the match have found that Murray has suffered ruptures to his anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and his calcaneofibular ligament (CFL). Both of these are ankle injuries and the recovery time is dependent on the severity of it. In a worst-case scenario, surgery may be required to address the issue.

“Yesterday towards the end of my match in Miami I suffered a full rupture of my ATFL and near full thickness rupture of my CFL,” Murray wrote on Instagram.
“I will see an ankle specialist when I return home to determine next steps. Goes without saying this is a tough one to take and I’ll be out for an extended period. But I’ll be back with 1 hip and no ankle ligaments when the time is right.”

Murray will now miss the majority of the clay swing and his participation in the French Open is up in the air. The next Grand Slam will begin in just over eight weeks on May 26th. He hasn’t played at the event since 2020 and opted to skip it last year to focus on Wimbledon.

It is the latest in a series of injury nightmares for the 36-year-old who plays with a metal hip. Last year he was troubled by issues with his abdomen and shoulder.

The setback comes during what is expected to be Murray’s final season on the Tour. He has previously hinted at stepping away from the sport in 2024 but has not mentioned which tournament will be the last that he plays.

Murray has won 46 ATP titles and earned more than $64M in prize money.
