Musetti went up a 2-0 lead in the first set with a break in the second game. Marterer broke straight back in the third game. Musetti did not convert two break points in the sixth game before Marterer broke in the seventh game to take a 4-3 lead. Musetti broke back to draw level to 4-4. Musetti saved two break points in the ninth game before breaking serve on his third set point in the 10th game.
Musetti did not convert two break points in the second game before breaking twice in the sixth and eighth games to seal the second set 6-2.
Roberto Bautista beat Richard Gasquet 6-3 7-5 to set up a second round match against Olympic silver medallist Karen Khachanov. Bautista Agut broke serve in the sixth game and served out the first set at love.
Bautista Agut saved three break points in the fourth game to hold serve at love and broke serve in the 11th game to take a 6-5 lead. He served out the second set 7-5 on his second match point.
Alexander Schevchenko edged past Benjamin Bonzi 7-6 (7-4) 6-4. Schevchenko, who reached the quarter final in Montpellier last week, set up a second round match against top seed Hubert Hurkacz. Schevchenko saved three set points in the 12th game of the first set before racing out to a 4-0 lead in the tie-break. Bonzi pulled one of the mini-breaks back, but Schevchenko held on his serve to win the tie-break 7-4. Schevchenko broke serve in the eighth game to take a 5-3 lead. Bonzi broke back in the ninth game for 4-5, but Schevchenko sealed the second set with his second break in the 10th game.
