Ajla Tomljanovic has suffered another setback in her return to professional tennis after undergoing surgery to treat a new health issue.

The former top 40 player has undergone treatment to remove some uterine fibroids from her body. Uterine Fibroids are a common type of noncancerous tumour that can grow in and on the uterus with NHS England estimating that 2 in three women will develop at least one type of fibroid in their lives. Symptoms vary depending on the person but they can include heavy periods, abdominal pain, lower back pain and a frequent need to urinate.

“Unfortunately, I won’t be competing for a couple of weeks. [I] was very much looking forward to the next hard court events,” Tomljanovic said on Instagram.
“I had to get some uterine fibroids removed and will be watching from home while healing. Will be back soon.”

The 30-year-old has included a link in her social media which the public can click on to find more more about the condition.

Tomljanovic returned to the tour at the end of last year following a 10-month absence due to a knee injury. In November she won a WTA 125 event in Florianopolis, Brazil which was her first singles title of any sort for 10 years. More recently, she has suffered first round losses at the Australian Open and Hua Hin Open in Thailand.

The Croatian-born Australian is a three-time Grand Slam quarter-finalist and is a four-time runner-up at WTA events. She has yet to announce when she will return to the Tour following her latest surgery.
