America’s Chris Eubanks has suffered a blow ahead of the Australian Open after losing his opening match at the ASB Classic where he underwent medical treatment.

Eubanks, who is currently ranked 34th in the world, suffered a 7-6 (5), 6-2 loss to Botic van de Zandschulp in what was his first match of the 2024 season. The American underwent treatment for a glute muscle injury and dropped serve twice in the second set.

The setback comes after a breakout 2023 season for Eubanks who was ranked outside the top 100 12 months ago before reaching a peak of 29th in July. Last year he won his maiden ATP title at the Mallorca Open before reaching the quarter-finals at Wimbledon.

Meanwhile, van de Zandschulp has recorded his first win over a top 50 player on an outdoor hardcourt since the 2023 Miami Masters when he stunned Casper Ruud. He is currently ranked 59th in the world but has been as high as 22.

“It’s always tough to play Chris,” van de Zandschulp said afterward.
“He was serving well so you can’t afford to lose focus at any second. I served quite well and played well in the rallies.”
“I went sometimes for the return. For example, at 15-40 and then he’s serve two good serves. Even if you have chances, you have to make them, because he’s serving so well.”

Van de Zandschulp will next play qualifier Alejandro Tabilo who beat Borna Gojo 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Another high-profile exit from Auckland on Monday was French veteran Gael Monfils who was ousted in three sets by Fabian Marozsan. The 37-year-old had a break advantage during the final set but was unable to hold onto his lead as he lost 6-4, 6-7(6), 7-6(4), after more than two-and-a-half hours of play.

“I’m happy to beat Monfils, he’s a great player,” said Marozsan.
“He was a top-10 player in the last 15 years so he has great experience.”

The Hungarian’s victory has set him up with a showdown against top seed Ben Shelton. Marozsan’s biggest win of his career so far occurred at last year’s Italian Open where he stunned Carlos Alcaraz.

Finally, 19-year-old Luca Van Assche will play second seed Cameron Norrie in the second round after beating JJ Wolf 6-4, 6-2.
