Alex de Minaur says he wants to be ranked among the best tennis players in the world as he aims to crack the top 10 for the first time next year.
The world No.12 heads into the new season full of confidence after a solid season which ended with him reaching the quarter-finals of the Paris Masters. Earlier in the year, de Minaur also won an ATP 500 event in Alcapulco and reached the final of three other tournaments, including the Canadian Masters. In the Grand Slams, his best results were reaching the fourth round at both the Australian Open and Wimbledon. His overall win-loss record across 2023 is 43-24.
De Minaur has been recognized for his efforts on the Tour by being awarded the Newcome Medal by Tennis Australia. The medal is given to Australia’s most outstanding elite tennis player of the year. It is the second time the 24-year-old has won the award which makes him only the third person to have won it multiple times. The others to do so are newly appointed BJK Cup captain Sam Stosur and former world No.1 Ash Barty.
Speaking to Tennis Australia, a determined De Minaur says he has his eyes set on reaching new milestones in the future.
“I think it’s no secret that I want to be with the best players in the world,” he said.
“You know, breaking into the top 10 is obviously going to be a big goal of mine.“I know it’s going to be tough. I’m quite close, but there’s still a lot of work to be done.
“Hopefully I can knuckle down, have a good start to the Australian summer and put myself in a good position to hopefully break that barrier.”
As it currently stands, he is just 360 points adrift from making his debut in the top 10. He is one of eight Australian men to finish 2023 ranked inside the top 100 but the only one to be inside the top 30.
De Minaur has the bonus of starting 2024 in his home country where he will play in the United Cup before the Australian Open.
“It’s an exciting time of the year for all of us Aussies,” he said. “I think we all thrive playing in our home country in our home Slam.
“We always seem to find an extra level when competing at home.”
The United Cup will begin on December 29th.
