Defending champion Lorenzo Sonego came back from one set down to beat Marcos Giron 2-6 6-3 7-6 (7-3) reaching the second round at the Moselle Open in Metz.
Giron earned an early break in the first game of the opening set. Sonego saved two break points in the seventh game, but Giron converted his third chance to open up a 5-2 lead. The US player served out the first set at love in the eighth game.
Both players went on serve until the first eight games, when Sonego converted his first break point with a backhand passing shot down the line to seal the second set 6-3. Sonego did not convert two break points in the third game of the decisive set. The third set went on serve en route to the tie-break. Sonego earned two mini-breaks to take a 6-2 lead and converted his first match point to close out the third set 7-2.
“I have a great memory of this tournament and I enjoy playing on this court. The atmosphere is special. The crowd gave me a lot of energy. I enjoy playing here”, said Sonego.
