Laura Siegemund and Vera Zvonareva beat Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Elle Perez 6-4 6-4 to claim the doubles title at the WTA Finals in Cancun.
Both teams were solid on serve saving break points in the first set. Siegemund and Zvonareva earned a crucial break in the third set to take a 2-1 lead and saved all five break points.
Melichar Martinez and Perez fended off seven break points they faced.
Siegemund hit a backhand crosscourt winner to break Melichar-Martinez at love in the third game of the second set to take a 2-1 lead. Melichar-Martinez fired a volley winner on the deciding point to draw level to 2-2 with a break-back.
Zvonareva earned another deciding point with consecutive groundstroke winners. Perez dropped her serve with a double fault. Zvonareva squandered the first two championships points at 5-4, but Siegemund converted the third chance to seal the title after 1 hour and 38 minutes.
Siegemund and Zvonareva have won their fourth title in the past four months following their triumphs Washington, Ningbo, Nanchang. Siegemund and Zvonareva won the US Open doubles title in 2020.
Zvonareva had previously played in the doubles tournament at the WTA Finals in 2007 and finished runner-up to Venus Williams in the singles tournament at the WTA Finals in 2008. The Russian player, who gave birth to her daughter in 2016, has become the first player to win the WTA Finals doubles title since Clara Black in 2014.
Siegemund is the first German player to win the WTA Finals doubles title.
