Canada won its first Billie Jean King Cup title in history by beating four-time champions Italy 2-0 in Seville. Marina Stakusic and Leylah Fernandez scored two straight-set wins
World number 258 Marina Stakusic beat world number 43 Martina Trevisan 7-5 6-3 in the first singles match to earn Canada a 1-0 lead over Italy in the opening match of the Billie Jean Cup Final in Seville.
Stakusic claimed her third win against a top 100 player this week following her previous wins against world number 65 Rebeka Makarova from Spain and world number 63 Magdalena Frech from Poland.
Stakusic earned the first break point after two break points from Trevisan in the second game of the opening set. The 18-year-Canadian player converted her third break point after Trevisan hit her backhand into the net. Trevisan broke back in the seventh game after a double fault from Stakusic. Trevisan earned her second break in the ninth game to take a 5-4 lead after a forehand down the line error from Stakusic earning a chance to serve for the set, but she went down 0-40. Stakusic converted her second break-back point in the 10th game to draw level to 5-5. Stakusic earned a set point on serve in the 12th game and converted it, as Trevisan sent her forehand long.
Trevisan started the second set with an early break in the first game. Stakusic won three consecutive games to take a 3-1 lead. Trevisan broke back in the fifth game to reduce the gap to 2-3. Stakusic broke serve in the sixth game and held serve at deuce to open up a 5-2 lead. Stakusic did not convert four match points as Trevisan served at 2-5, but she sealed the win on her fifth match point with a forehand winner.
Stakusic did not even win a WTA main draw match this year. The young Canadian player clinched her first win over a top 50 player in her career. She won three ITF Challenger titles in the second half of the year. She had lost to Alycia Parks 4-6 6-4 7-5 in the qualifying round in Montreal last August.
“I am so happy that I could play this week. This has been the best week of my life”, said Stakusic.
Leylah Fernandez beat Jasmine Paolini 6-2 6-3 in a match between two top 40 players. Five spots separate world number 35 Fernandez and world number 30 Paolini, but the Canadian player won both of their previous matches in straight sets in Abu Dhabi in 2021 and in the Doha qualifying round in 2023.
Fernandez converted her second break point in the first game of the opening set. The Canadian player consolidated the break with a hold at deuce in the second game. Paolini broke back in the fourth game to draw level to 2-2. Fernandez earned two more breaks in the fifth and seventh games to win the first set 6-2.
Fernandez converted her third break point from 0-40 down in a five-deuce third game to take a 2-1 lead. Paolini saved two break points to hold serve in the fifth game, but Fernandez earned a double break, as Paolini made a double fault. Paolini pulled one break back in the eighth game with a forehand winner on the sideline. Fernandez erased two game points at 5-3 before earning her first match point with a return winner. The Canadian women triumphed in the Billie Jean King Cup one year after the win of the Canadian men’s team in the Davis Cup.
The Canadian earned another break with a passing shot winner on her first match point after 1 hour and 39 minutes. Fernandez clinched wins in singles and doubles in the semifinal against Czech Republic.
Canada is the 13th nation to win the Billie Jean King Cup and the second new champion in two years following Switzerland’s title in Glasgow in 2022. Both Paolini and Trevisan had scored a perfect 3-0 record in singles matches en route to the final. The Italian team won four Fed Cup titles in an eight-year period between 2006 and 2013.
