Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from next week’s Swiss Indoors due to two separate physical issues, according to tournament organisers.

In a post published on social media, the two-time Grand Slam champion is currently dealing with inflammation in his left foot as well as a separate problem with his gluteal muscles. Neither Alcaraz nor his team are yet to publicly comment on the injuries or its severity.

“Carlos Alcaraz had to cancel his start at the Swiss Indoors (October 21-29) today due to an injury. According to his doctor’s bulletin, the world number two is suffering from an inflammation of the sole of his left foot and problems in his gluteal muscles.” A statement from the Swiss indoors read.

With up to 500 points up for grabs in Basel, Alcaraz’s withdrawal is a blow to his hopes of trying to dethrone Novak Djokovic from the No.1 spot before this year ends. As it currently stands, he is 2240 points behind the Serbian who is set to return to action at the Paris Masters later this month.

Alcaraz has won six titles so far in 2023 which is more than any other player on the ATP Tour. Overall, his win-loss record currently stands at 63-9. During the recent Asian swing, he lost in the semi-finals of the Beijing Open to Jannik Sinner before suffering a shock third round defeat to Grigor Dimitrov in Shanghai.

Caliming the vacant place in the Basel draw will be Stan Wawrinka. It will be his 16th appearance at the tournament.
