Beatriz Haddad Maia beat Caroline Garcia 6-1 7-6 (7-4) after 1 hour and 37 minutes to reach the semifinals at the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai.
Haddad Maia has scored her second consecutive win this week following her 6-4 6-4 victory over Madison Keys. The Brazilian player leads the Camelia Group with a 2-0 record. She has reached her third semifinal of the 2023 following Abu Dhabi and Roland Garros.
Haddad Maia raced out to a 5-0 lead with two breaks of serve in the second and fourth games. Garcia held on her first service game for 1-5, but Haddad Maia served out on her third set point.
Both players held on their serve in the first eight games of the second set until 4-4. Haddad Maia converted her fourth break point to take a 5-4 lead, but Garcia broke straight back to draw level to 5-5. The French player saved four break points to hold serve for 6-5. Haddad Maia held serve at love to set up a tie-break. Haddad Maia earned the first mini-break after Garcia’s first double fault. Garcia pulled one of the two mini-breaks back for 2-4. Haddad Maia created three match points and converted her second opportunity to close out the tie-break 7-4.
Haddad Maia fired 13 winners to 9 unforced errors, while Garcia produced 25 winners to 31 unforced errors.
