Ons Jabeur says she has been left feeling like a ‘zombie’ due to a flu-like illness that she has been battling against for a week at the US Open.

The fifth seed admits she is not feeling her best but still managed to book a spot in the third round of the New York major on Thursday after ousting Czech Republic’s Linda Noskova 7-6(7), 4-6, 6-3, in a rollercoaster match that lasted more than two hours. Jabeur was facing the prospect of a shock exit from the tournament after getting broken midway through the decider. However, she managed to get back on track by winning four games in a row to seal victory.

“I’ve been sick since I think Thursday. I’m taking a lot of medicine,” said Jabeur. “I’m doing everything I can with my team trying to recover.’

“Honestly, they have amazing doctors here, so they’ve been helping me. “We try to manage what my health is right now. I’m glad it was two matches, and two tests for me. I was trying to push myself to see what I could do, getting out of my comfort zone.’
“Hopefully I will continue in a better shape and feel better for the next match.”

At this year’s tournament, a series of players have been hampered by illness. Dominic Thiem was forced to retire from his clash against Ben Shelton due to a gastrointestinal illness and Chris Eubanks said he felt unwell during his second round match. Providing details on what her illness is, Jabeur stated that it is not stomach-related and believes it could be a type of flu.

“I’m a zombie because I have the flu,” she joked.

The latest victory is Jabeur’s 13th win at a major event this season which is the most she has ever achieved within the same year in her career. The Tunisian has reached the final in three out of the last five Grand Slam tournaments played but is yet to win a title.

The 29-year-old will next play Marie Bouzkova in the third round on Saturday in what will be their second Tour meeting. Last year Jabeur beat the Czech 3-6, 6-1, 6-1, at Wimbledon.

“It’s going to be tough playing her, but I’m going to get ready and hopefully prepare well for the match,” Jabeur commented.
