Alexander Zverev beat Pavel Kotov 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 6-1 in 2 hours ad to reach his ninth quarter final of the year on his debut at the Chengdu Open.
Zverev won 86% of his first serve points and converted three of his six breaks
The first set went on serve en route to the tie-break. Zverev earned two mini-breaks to open up a 3-0 lead. Kotov pulled back on serve to draw level to 4-4. Zverev closed out the first set 7-5 with his third mini-break.
Both players went on serve until the 10th game when Kotov broke serve to close out the second set 6-4 forcing the match to the decider.
Zverev pulled away with three breaks in the third, fifth and seventh games to win the third set 6-1 after 2 hours and 26 minutes. Zverev is happy to be back in China for the for the first time since 2019. The German player reached a final at the 2019 Shanghai Masters 1000 tournament, where he lost to Danil Medvedev. Zverev has moved into seventh in the ATP Race to Turin ahead of Holger Rune.
“The best players in the world find a way to win when they are not playing great, In the end I won and that’s the most important thing. I am still in the tournament”, said Zverev.
Grigor Dimitrov edged past Juan Pablo Varillas 6-3 6-4 to advance to the quarter finals. Dimitrov earned the first break in the second game of the opening set. Pablo Varillas broke straight back in the third game and held serve to draw level to 2-2. Both players traded breaks in the sixth and seventh games. Dimitrov broke serve for the third time in the eighth game to win the first set 6-3.
Dimitrov broke serve at love in the third game to take a 2-1 lead. Varillas pulled back on serve to draw level to 2-2. Dimitrov broke for the second time in the ninth game to close out the match after 2 hours and 26 minutes.
Dimitrov will face Christopher O’Connell. The Bulgarian player will be seeking his first title of the season after reaching the final in Geneva.
Lorenzo Musetti battled past Australian Next Gen Philip Sekulic 7-6 (7-3) 6-7 (4-7) 6-0 after 2 hours and 54 minutes to reach his third quarter final on hard court.
The first set started with a trade of breaks. Musetti converted his second break point in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead. Sekulic broke back in the eighth game to draw level to 4-4. Musetti went up a 4-1 lead with two mini-breaks. Sekulic pulled one mini-break back for 2-4. Musetti earned his third mini-break to win the tie-break 6-3.
Sekulic earned a break in the fifth game of the second set to take a 3-2 lead. Musetti broke straight back in the sixth game to draw level to draw level to 3-3. Musetti went up a 4-2 lead in the tie-break, but Sekulic won five straight points to clinch the second tie-break 7-4.
Musetti broke three times to take a bagel win in the third set. The Italian player will face Arthur Rinderknech, who beat Marcos Giron 7-6 (7-2) 6-4.
