There was a mixture of results for three of the bottom half’s top seeds on day two of the US Open.

Jessica Pegula, Ons Jabeur and Caroline Garcia had different fortunes today on day two at the US Open with two of the three high profile seeds advancing to the second round.

Starting with Pegula, the American is one of the favourites to go all the way at the New York and she started with a 6-2 6-2 demolition of Camila Giorgi.

The third seed was dominant in the 84 minute victory which sees her into the second round to face either Patricia Maria Tig or Rebecca Marino.

However it was a slightly more complicated route for fifth seed Ons Jabeur who battled her way to a 7-5 7-6(4) victory over Camila Osorio.

Jabeur had stormed out to a 4-1 lead in the opening set but was clearly struggling with the heat as there was a couple of occasions she was struggling to walk.

This saw Osorio come back into the match to take a 5-4 lead before some majestic skills from Jabeur saw her claim the opening set 7-5, having saved four break points in the twelfth game.

In the second set there were multiple breaks with Jabeur coming back from a 3-1 deficit as she had two match points in the ninth game.

However Jabeur couldn’t close the match out and the second set went to a tiebreak which the Tunisian took 7-5.

After the match Jabeur explained the situation in regards to her health, “I’m old now, that’s why I didn’t feel so good on the court,” Jabeur jokingly said to the US Open website after turning 29 years old yesterday.

“I’m glad that I got the win, especially that I proved I can push myself to keep doing better on the court. She’s such a nice person, she asked if I was OK. I told her, ‘not really.’ She told me I’m such a warrior and I apologized for bringing the doctor on court. I didn’t do it on purpose.

“I know it’s tough sometimes to play someone who is injured or feeling bad. She took it really well and congratulated me for the match.”

Jabeur will hope to be in a better physical condition when she takes on Linda Noskova in the second round.

One player who won’t be making the second round is Caroline Garcia as her horrible season continues after a 6-4 6-1 defeat to Chinese qualifier Yafan Wang, who will now play Katie Boulter on Thursday.
