Tommy Paul is aiming to take his opportunity at Masters 1000 glory after beating Carlos Alcaraz in Canada for a second year in a row.

The American upset the world number one for a second year in a row in Canada as he reached his first Masters 1000 semi-final.

After beating Alcaraz in Montreal last year, Paul backed up last year’s win by beating him in Toronto 12 months later to seal a place in the last four in Canada.

After the match Paul admitted it helps knowing you can beat your opponent and spoke about his performance against the Spaniard, “It helps knowing that you can beat your opponent,” Paul told the ATP website.

“You never want to walk on the court and be like ‘I don’t know if I can beat this guy’. It’s the attitude you’ve got to have no matter who you are playing. I would say it helped a little bit.

“I played a really good match today. I really went after my shots. You can’t start any points on your heels against him or he’ll take advantage of that. So you really have to go after your shots early in the rally and I was feeling really good on the first-strike tennis. That was the difference today.”

Whatever happens in Toronto, Paul will rise to a career-high ranking of 12 in the world.

Paul will now play seventh seed Jannik Sinner in the last four after the Italian edged past Gael Monfils 6-4 4-6 6-3.

The other semi-final will see Alex De Minaur take on Alejandro Davidovich Fokina after they defeated Daniil Medvedev and Mackenzie McDonald respectively.

Whoever wins the title in Toronto will claim their first Masters 1000 title of their career.
