Matteo Berrettini sets up second round match against Jannik Sinner in Toronto

Matteo Berrettini beat Gregoire Barrére 6-4 6-3 in 75 minutes to set up an Italian second round against Jannik Sinner at the National Bank Open in Toronto. 

Berrettini entered Wimbledon with just seven wins all year, but he reached the fourth round at the British Grand Slam tournament. 

Berrettini earned the first break in the third game with his forehand. The Italiani dropped just two points on his serve. 

Berrettini earned the first break in the first game of the second set. Barrère broke straight back in the next game. Berrettini broke for the second game in the fifth game with a passing shot. The 2021 Wimbledon finalist sealed the win with another break on his his second match point in 76 minutes. 

Gael Monfils overcame Wimbledon quarter finalist Christopher Eubanks 7.6 (7-3) 6-7 (4-7) 6-1. 

The first set went on serve en route to the tie-break. Monfils earned two mini-breaks to win the first set tie-break 7-3. Monfils served for the match at 5-3 in the second set, but he did not convert two match points at 6-5. The Frenchman lead 4-1 in the seoond set tie-break, but Eubanks won six consecutive points to win the tie-break 7-4 forcing the match to the decider. Monfils broke three times to win the third set 6-1. 

“It was a tough match, but I picked up a little confidence last week in Washington. It’s always good to beat top players. I am very happy”, said Monfils. 

Lorenzo Musetti beat Yoshihito Nishihoka 6-4 6-1. Musetti sealed the first set with his only break in the 10th game. The young Italian player broke twice in the second and fourth games and sealed the win on his second match point. 

Hubert Hurkacz beats Alexander Bublik 6-3 7-6 (7-2). Hurkacz earned his first break in the third game to take a 2-1 lead. Bublik broke back in the fourth game to draw level to 2-2. Hurkacz broke again in the first game to to take a 3-2 lead and sealed the first set with his third break in the ninth game. Bublik broke in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead. Hurkacz broke back in the sixth game. Hurkacz earned three mini-breaks to race out to a 6-0 lead. Bublik saved two match points, but Hurkacz closed out he win on his third opportunity.
