John Isner has announced that he will retire from professional tennis after this year’s US Open.

The big-serving American will play his 17th consecutive US Open, which will also be his last ever professional tennis tournament.

This was announced on Isner’s Instagram page where he opened up with the following statement, “There comes a time in every athlete’s career that they have to decide to hang it up. For me, that time is now,” Isner was quoted by the ATP website as saying.

“I didn’t come [to] this decision lightly, but I feel it is the right way to go. When I left the University of Georgia in 2007, there was no way I could have imagined playing 17 years on the ATP Tour. Of course, there are countless matches I wish I could have back, but I am proud of what I was able to accomplish. The journey was nothing short of incredible.”

Isner was involved in some memorable matches which included the infamous Wimbledon match with Nicolas Mahut that ended in a 70-68 final set.

The American’s big serve and athleticism allowed him to climb to a career-high ranking of eight in the world in 2016.

Isner also reached four Masters 1000 singles finals as well as winning five Masters 1000 doubles titles with three of those being with Jack Sock.

Before Isner finishes his career he will be taking part in doubles with Jack Sock as well as singles at the US Open, which starts on Monday.
