Stefanos Tsitsipas has brought a familiar face back into his team just two months after they decided to go their separate ways.
Former top 10 player Mark Philippoussis has been spotted in Los Cabos with the tennis player and it is now been confirmed that the two have reached a new arrangement. Earlier this year Tsitsipas stopped working with the Australian. During the French Open, he said his decision to do so was because he wanted just one mentor. He is also coached on the Tour by his father Apostolos.
“I’m at a phase of my career in life where I need one coach that can provide all the information, all the analysis, all of the things that I’m looking for to improve my game. Less is more, in my opinion.” He said.
Tsitsipas maintains this view but has reached a compromise which sees him working with the two-time Grand Slam finalist once again. According to SDNA, Philippoussis and Apostolos will take turns accompanying him at various tournaments, apart from Grand Slams. It has been reported that the Australian will be with Tsitsipas in Los Cabos, Toronto and Cincinnati. Meanwhile, Apostolos will go to New York for the US Open, where it is understood that Philippoussis will also be present.
It is expected that this new arrangement could last until the end of this season.
Philippoussis had been working alongside Maria Sakkari on a trial period during the grasscourt swing. Following her early exit from Wimbledon, the world No.9 said she hoped to continue collaborating with him for an extended period.
“There are a lot of things I can learn from him. I think that he’s a great guy and a great coach. He has helped a lot with my game,” she said.
“It would be amazing if all the three of us can continue together.”
Tsitsipas is the top seed at the Los Cabos Open this week. He will be bidding to win his 10th ATP title and first this year. So far this season, he has won 35 out of 48 matches played with his best results being a run to the finals of the Australian Open in January and the Barcelona Open in April.
