Caroline Garcia beat Katie Volynets 6-4 6-3 to win her opening match at Wimbledon for the sixth time in her career.
Garcia achieved the best results of her career at Wimbledon, when she resched the Round of 16 in 2017 and 2022.
Garcia converted four of her eight break points.
Both players held on their service games with no breaks of serve until 5-4 in the first set. Garcia earned the first set point with a forehand on return and converted it with a return winner.
Volynets went up a double break to race out to a 3-0 lead in the second set. Garcia won four consecutive games to take a 4-3 lead before the match was iinterrupted by rain for an hour and a half.
As the match resumed, Garcia won the last six games overall to seal the second set 6-3.
Garcia set up a second round match against 2021 US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez, who edged past Kateryna Baindl 6-4 4-6 6-4 after 2 hours and 23 minutes.
Fernandez came back from a break down twice in the third set. Fernandez won 65% of her first service points and broke six times.
The Canadian player converted all of her three break points in the decisive set and hit 11 winners to Baindl’s six.
Garcia beat Fernandez twice at the Australian Open in two close sets and at Indian Wells in three sets.
