On a day that saw the return of Roger Federer to Wimbledon, Carlos Alcaraz wished his match was the one being watched by the Swiss maestro.

The top seed began his campaign with an emphatic 6-0, 6-2, 7-5, win over French veteran Jeremy Chardy who was playing the last match of his career. In the clash, he blasted 38 winners past his rival and dropped serve only once. It is the third time in a row he has reached the second round of Wimbledon. Should he win the title this year he would become the third-youngest man in history to do so after Boris Becker and Bjorn Borg.

“I’m really happy with the level that I played and with my performance today. I played a really good game today. It is something that I am going to take to the next round,” he said afterward.

The 20-year-old played his opening match on Court One around the same time Elena Rybakina began her title defence on Center Court. Also on the grounds was eight-time champion Federer who was invited to the event to mark his record title tally. Three years ago a young Alcaraz had a hitting session with the 20-time Grand Slam champion at SW19 but they never locked horns on the Tour before he retired.

However, the Spaniard still has high praise for the tennis legend.

“I saw that Roger Federer was here and I was a little bit jealous. I wanted him to watch one of my matches obviously,” he commented with a smile.
“I wish to talk a little bit with him. For me, that would be amazing. I hope to see him around.”

Whilst he is inspired by others, the world No.1 is continuing the early stages of building his own legacy in the sport. After beating Chardy, he has now claimed 30 wins at major tournaments at the age of 20 years and 60 days. To put that into perspective, the last player to do this at a younger age than him was Novak Djokovic in 2007.

Alcaraz is one of the leading title contenders this year at Wimbledon even though it is only his fourth grass court event on the pro Tour. He recently claimed his first title on the surface at Queen’s and is hungry to add more silverware to his collection. He currently has five ATP titles to his name, including the 2022 US Open trophy.

“To win this tournament. That’s the main goal right now for me. I have a lot of confidence right now.” He stated.
“Every day you learn something new (on grass). Every time that I get out to the court playing, it’s better for me. I get more experience that is important on that surface.”

The Spaniard is both ambitious and humble at the same time. He is seen by many as the player who will take over from the big three and dominate men’s tennis. However, Alcaraz’s perspective is somewhat different.

“I don’t feel at the time I’m the best in my generation. There are a lot of great players my age that are there right now. We are going to share great moments. That’s all I can say right now.” He concluded.

Alcaraz will play either Alexandre Muller or Arthur Rinderknech in the next round.
