Last Sunday Novak Djokovic became the most decorated Grand Slam singles champion in the history of men’s tennis.
In the final of the French Open, he defeated Casper Ruud in straight sets to capture his 23rd major title at the age of 36. The Serbian has also become the first man to have won every Grand Slam tournament on three or more occasions, as well as the oldest to win the French Open trophy. Outside of the major events, he is also the only one to have won every Masters 1000 trophy.
Djokovic’s latest triumph has reignited the Greatest Of All Time (GOAT) debate once again with some pundits believing he should have this accolade. However, it can be argued that giving a player such a label is almost impossible to do due to the different eras of tennis. Perhaps it is more fair to rank the world No.1 as the greatest player of this current period but not the GOAT?
