Lorenzo Musetti sealed his spot in the quarter final with a 6-3 6-3 win over Gregoire Barrére after 96 minutes at the BOSS Open in Stuttgart. Musetti has the 17thquarter final of his career and his first on grass.
Musetti saved all seven break points. The Italian player broke twice in the fifth and ninth games to win the first set 6-3.
Musetti saved six break points in the first game of the second set to hold serve for 1-0. Musetti earned the break in the eighth game and held serve on his first match point to seal the second set 6-3.
“I am really happy because Gregoire is a really good player and I was thinking he could be a tough opponent, but today I showed a really good level”, said Musetti.
Musetti will face Frances Tiafoe, who beat Jiri Lehecka 7-6 (7-2) 6-4. Tiafoe saved a break point at 4-4 in the first set which went on serve en route to the tie-break. Tiafoe earned two mini-breaks to win the first set. The US player earned a break in the ninth game of the second set before saving two break points in the 10th game.
“I enjoyed it, being on grass. It’s one of my favourite surfaces and I love being here, playing on grass. Let’s see how it goes”, said Tiafoe.
Hubert Hurkacz came back from one set down to beat Yosuke Watanuki 4-6 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-5). Watanuki broke serve in the ninth game to win the first set 6-4.
The second set went on serve en route to the tie-break where Hurkacz earned an early mini-break to take a 2-0 lead. Watanuki pulled back on serve to draw level to 5-5. Hurkacz was two points from defeat, but he earned his second mini-break to seal the second set tie-break 7-5.
Watanuki saved three break points in the third set. Both players went on serve en route to the second tie-break. Hurkacz earned an early mini-break to take a 3-1 lead. Watanuki pulled back on serve on the 10th point to draw level to 5-5. Hurkacz closed out the match with his second mini-break on the 12th point.
