Iga Swiatek and Ons Jabeur cruised into the third round of Roland Garros after wins over Claire Liu and Oceane Dodin respectively.
Starting with the world number one, Swiatek overcame a tricky opening set to defeat Claire Liu 6-4 6-0.
The Pole took a double break lead at 3-0 in the opening set before making a handful of unforced errors with Liu playing some aggressive tennis to get the deficit back.
However Swiatek broke straight back and wrapped up the opening set 6-4 in 51 minutes.
In the second set, Swiatek dominated the match securing all six games and a place in the third round.
After the match Swiatek praised Liu’s level and was happy with the intensity showed in the second set, “Well, for sure, you know, kind of in my head and physically the process was pretty similar as two days ago,” the Pole explained.
“So I was able to play a little bit better in the second set, and I kind of used first set to get more information and get into the rhythm, but Claire played
pretty well. I feel like it was more intense. But I’m happy that I’m into the third round and I have a chance to play more matches here.”
Swiatek will now play Xinyu Wang in the third round with the Pole not set to face a seed until the Quarter-Finals.
However Swiatek wasn’t the only favourite to advance to the last 32 as seventh seed Ons Jabeur cruised past Oceane Dodin 6-2 6-3.
It was a scrappy opening set which saw Jabeur miss some opportunities especially in the second game where she failed to convert four break points.
Jabeur eventually took her seventh break point of the match to take a 3-1 lead but was immediately broken back by a resilient Dodin.
From then on Jabeur was clinical on return as she broke on four occasions to nullify Dodin’s baseline threat and clinch victory.
After the match Jabeur stated that she is getting back to her level and is feeling comfortable with her game, “I think, yeah, I’m getting back to my
level,” the Tunisian said.
“I feel like I’m moving great, and I’m feeling like it’s getting better during the matches. The game is there. Physically I’m feeling definitely much better. Just a few things that are going to go my way probably in the next few matches. But yeah, we’ll keep working hard and improving every day.”
Jabeur will look to continue her hard work and improved form when she takes on Olga Danilovic on Saturday in the third round.
