Thiago Seyboth Wild knocked out Rome champion Daniil Medvedev in a five set marathon to reach the second round at Roland Garros.

The Brazilian qualifier edged out Medvedev 7-6(5) 6-7(6) 2-6 6-3 6-4 in a match that lasted over four hours.

Both players were broken on seven occasions with Medvedev only holding serve twice in the deciding set.

Next for Seyboth Wild is Guido Pella on Thursday after the Argentinian defeated Halys in five sets.

It was a grinding match that took four hours and 15 minutes with the pace being set early with a a lot of long games.

Medvedev initially broke to begin the match before the world number 172 broke back in the fourth game.

Towards the end of the opening set, both players created break point opportunities however none were taken as the opening set went to a tiebreak.

It was the Brazilian who played the pressure points better as he edged the opening tiebreak 7-5.

In the second set, Medvedev showed signs that he was back to his best the type of form that won him the title in Rome.

There was much more aggressive and efficient serving from the world number two as there were limited opportunities for Seyboth Wild to break.

Meanwhile Medvedev couldn’t make the most of his own opportunities as he missed two break points in the ninth game.

Again the second set went to a tiebreak which saw Medvedev come back from 6-4 down and save two set points to claim the tiebreak 8-6.

That seemed to be the momentum shift that Medvedev was hoping for as he was dominant on return and was winning the physical battle with the Brazilian who wasn’t as well conditioned as Medvedev.

The second seed was more clinical on return and clutch on serve as he broke on three occasions to take the third set 6-2, taking a two set to one lead.

At this point both players were struggling with the ultra slow conditions but Seyboth Wild showed no fear in the third set as he broke in the second game for a 2-0 lead.

Medvedev came back with a break of his own in the fifth game, only for Seyboth Wild to break straight back in a long sixth game for a 4-2 lead.

That break was the crucial one needed to take this into a deciding set as he held his nerve under pressure.

The final set was a scrappy affair that saw Medvedev only hold serve twice with both players seemingly finding it difficult to generate power when it really mattered.

However it was Seyboth Wild who was aggressive really mattered as a powerful forehand sealed the biggest win of his career.

After the win Seyboth Wild described it as a dream come true to win on Philippe-Chatrier, “I’ve watched Daniil play throughout my entire junior career and I’ve always dreamed of being on this court playing these kinds of players so it’s a dream come true,” Seyboth Wild was quoted by the BBC as saying.

“Walking on the court I really just wanted to get the angles, use my forehand against his and it worked pretty well. It was pretty tough and I started cramping at the end of the second set. I couldn’t serve the way I wanted to.

“I could only do my best and it worked. I am really happy with the way I played.”

Seyboth Wild will now return on Thursday to take on Pella while Medvedev will now focus on the grass court season.
