Iga Swiatek could meet fellow Roland Garros champion Barbora Krejcikova in the last 16 in Paris after Thursday’s draw.
The world number one is the defending champion in Paris after defeating Coco Gauff in the final last year.
Fast-forward a year later and the pair could meet again in the last eight with Swiatek being handed a tough draw in Paris.
The top seed will face Cristina Bucsa in her opening match with Claire Liu potentially waiting in the second round.
Then a tricky third round match against Marie Bouzkova could be followed by a match against 2021 champion Barbora Krejcikova.
Krejcikova will start her campaign against Lesia Tsurenko in the first round while another popcorn first round will take place in this section of the draw as Victoria Azarenka takes on Bianca Andreescu.
As for Gauff, the American will begin her campaign in Paris against Rebeka Masarova with Rome finalist Anhelina Kalinina awaiting in the third round.
The winner of the top quarter will likely face Rome champion Elena Rybakina who will begin against a qualifier or lucky loser.
Rybakina could meet Petra Martic or Shelby Rogers in the third round while Beatriz Haddad Maia is expected to be the Kazakh’s fourth round opponent.
Injury-prone Ons Jabeur is the projected quarter-final opponent for Rybakina with the Tunisian facing Lucia Bronzetti in the opening round.
Jabeur could face Sorana Cirstea in the third round on her way to a second week meeting with Petra Kvitova or in-form Donna Vekic.
In the bottom half of the draw, Madrid champion Aryna Sabalenka has an extremely tough opening round match against Marta Kostyuk.
Should Sabalenka get through that opening test then Karolina Pliskova could await in the last 16 with the Czech Republican having a fairly tough opening round against former finalist Sloane Stephens.
Caroline Garcia will look to revitalise her form on home soil when she takes on Xiyu Wang in her opening match.
Garcia is likely to face the winner of Martina Trevisan and Elina Svitolina in the third round while Jelena Ostapenko or Daria Kasatkina are potential last 16 opponents.
Finally in the third quarter, a tasty opening round between Danielle Collins and third seed Jessica Pegula headlines the quarter with eighth seed Maria Sakkari also having a tough opener against Karolina Muchova.
As well as these two headline matches a dramatic contest between Alize Cornet and Camila Giorgi should set Roland Garros alive with two no-nonsense players.
