Daniil Medvedev has admitted that he feels sorry for Ukrainian players as the aftermath of Lesia Tsurenko’s retirement continues.

Tsurenko withdrew from her match with Aryna Sabalenka after having a conversation with WTA chief Steve Simon over the situation regarding Anastasia Potapova wearing a Spartak Moscow shirt.

Potapova has since been given a warning however Simon’s lack of empathy as shown below has raised concerns over how tennis is supporting the Ukrainian players on the tour.

A difficult situation faces the tour with Wimbledon set to allow Russian and Belarusian players play this year’s event.

Speaking after his quarter-final win over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Medvedev was asked about Ukraine and admitted he felt sorry for the Ukrainian players, “First of all, I definitely do feel sorry for all the Ukrainian players and what they go through,” Medvedev told the press conference.

“For sure, the situation with Tsurenko, I don’t know in details. It’s more for her and for maybe a little bit Sabalenka to answer, because I actually didn’t know about this till the next day.

“I was actually — because I finished the match before them, and then I was surprised there were doubles after. I thought there was singles match, and then the next day I saw it.

“Talking about top players, of course we have a responsibility, and it depends how every person, individual, will do with it and will hold with it. I always said the same, I’m for peace all over the world, to be honest, and that’s all I can say.”

There will be more aftermath on the situation as Ukrainian continue to feel the effects from the war that is happening in their country.

As for Medvedev he will look to win his 19th match in a row when he takes on Frances Tiafoe at the Indian Wells semi-finals.
