Bianca Andreescu is into the round of 16 of the Miami Open after beating the American Sofia Kenin in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 33 minutes on Stadium court.
The Toronto native hit 20 winners and served seven aces in a match that she was in full control from start to finish.
“I felt like she was serving well,”Andreescu said.” I was serving well as well but I think my serve in the key moments and some of my returns were the things that got me through today.”
After both players held their opening service games it was the Canadian who set up the first breakpoint of the match with a powerful forehand winner and broke the following point this time with a backhand return winner.
That break of serve was enough for Andreescu to serve out the first set and in the second set she continued to ride the momentum, breaking Kenin’s serve at the same exact juncture as the first set.
At 3-1, the Toronto native managed to turn that break into a double break breaking the American at love thanks to another backhand return winner down the line.
Kenin responded the following game breaking right back to get one break of serve back but it wasn’t enough as the 2021 Miami finalist served out the match.
After the match in her on-court interview, she was asked about her mental health and she believes it is a huge factor.
” Last time I was here in 2021 I did not enjoy myself and I felt like I didn’t deserve to be in that final but this year I feel like a totally different person and I feel like I deserve to be here right now”.
Andreescu will next face the Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova the number 18 seed after she was able to upset the number nine seed Belinda Bencic in three sets 7-6, 6-3 in one hour and 55 minutes on Grandstand.
