Novak Djokovic’s run to his latest title at the Australian Open saw him contend with more than just a niggle in his hamstring.

The world No.1 claimed his 10th title in Melbourne Park on Sunday by defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets. Throughout the tournament, Djokovic only dropped one set in seven matches played but at the same time was also hampered by a physical issue that threatened to derail his bid.

Heading into the Australian Open, the Serbian suffered a hamstring injury during his semi-final match against Daniil Medvedev at the Adelaide International but still managed to go on and win the tournament. Whilst confirming he has had treatment on his hamstring and wearing strapping in the area, Djokovic did not reveal any specific details about his injury while playing.

However, Australian Open boss Craig Tiley has revealed during an interview with SEN Sportsday on Wednesday that the tennis star was diagnosed with a 3cm tear in the region following a medical test. It is unknown when exactly Djokovic was told about his tear.

“This guy, I did see he had a three centimetre tear in his hammy,” said Tiley.
“The doctors are going to tell you the truth. I think there was a lot of speculation on whether it was true or not.
“It’s hard to believe that someone can do what they do with those types of injuries, but he’s remarkable.
“He’s so focused on everything he does – every single minute of the day. What he eats, what he drinks, when he does it, how he does it. There’s no mental breakdown ever in what he does.
“To win ten Australian Opens, I don’t think that will ever be repeated.”

Following Djokovic’s latest win at Melbourne Park, coach Goran Inavisevic told reporters that he believes “97% of players” would not have played in the Grand Slam if they were in a similar situation.

Although it is not the first time the Serbian has overcome injury to win the Australian Open title. Back in 2019, he battled to victory despite tearing a muscle in his abdomen during his third round match with Taylor Fritz. The tear was first measured at 17mm but increased to 25mm after he played his next four matches.

Djokovic now has 22 Grand Slam titles to his name which equals Rafael Nadal for most major tournaments won by a male player.
