Nine-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic has dismissed concerns about a potential injury following confusion over his practice schedule on Monday.

Djokovic, who is bidding to win a record-equalling 23rd Grand Slam title at Melbourne Park, cancelled a practice session that was set to take place at 19:00 local time. Journalist Sasa Ozmo confirmed the decision after being notified by the organizers.

However, a couple of hours later the former world No.1 did conduct a training session in Melbourne at an area which was not open for fans to attend. Although some journalists did have access to watch the Serbian in action. Djokovic did have tape on his left leg but afterwards stated to those watching him that there is nothing significant to worry about. Although he didn’t address why his original practice session was cancelled.

“Thank you for coming. Everything is ok, see you at the match,” he said.

In recent days the former world No.1 has been dealing with a hamstring issue and underwent treatment during his participation at the Adelaide International. At the tournament, Djokovic won his 92nd Tour title after ousting Sebastian Korda in a marathon final.

Over the weekend at his pre-tournament press conference, the world No.5 told reporters he was cautiously optimistic that his leg issue will not derail his quest for more Grand Slam glory. Djokovic is currently on a 34-match winning streak in Australia with his last loss being against Hyeon Chung in 2018.

“Well, I’ve been struggling with that a bit, to be honest, the last seven days. But it’s hopefully not the major concern,” he said. “So far I’ve been able to train, compete and play points, practice sets. So that’s a positive sign. Obviously, I’m being a bit more cautious. I’m not going full out on the training sessions, conserving the energy for next week. Hopefully it won’t cause an issue for me then.”

Djokovic will play Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena in the first round on Tuesday which will be the last match scheduled to take place on the Rod Laver Arena that day.
