Sinner went up a double break to race out to a 4-1 lead. He held on his serve and closed out the match in less than two hours.

Sinner has achieved his 17 match win at Grand Slam level in the past two years. Two days ago he achieved the milestone 1000th match win by an Italian player in Grand Slam history with his three-set victory over Kyle Edmund.

Sinner converted on all five of his break points and did not face any break points. The Italian player fired 32 winners and attacked the net 22 times, winning 20 of these points.

“I am very happy to be in the next round. I thank the fans for their support. I played good tennis. I served well. I returned very good because I think Etcheverry is a very good server. I am very happy to play again here on this court, especially today with the roof. Outside it’s raining a lot. Hopefully it’s not going to rain in the next days. For sure the level today was good. I am working at the net a lot in training and I am improving my volley and this gives me a lot of confidence that I will be able to try it more often in the future. I returned very good and today because I think he is a very good server.”, said Sinner in the post match interview.

Sinner has reached the quarter finals in all four Grand Slam tournaments during his career. He also reached the final eight in Major tournaments at Roland Garros in 2020, Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open in 2022.

The only other Italian player who achieved this feat is Matteo Berrettini, who reached the semifinal at the Australian Open 2022, the quarter final at Roland Garros in 2021, the Wimbledon final in 2021 and the US Open semifinal in 2019.

Sinner will face either Marton Fucsovics or Lloyd Harris in the third round.
