Adelaide finalist Linda Noskova suffered a shock defeat in Australian Open qualifying as she lost to Katherine Sebov 6-4 3-6 6-4.
The 18 year-old Czech sensation ran out of energy and gas as she lost in three sets to the world number 191.
An intense third set saw two breaks of serve at the end of the set from the Canadian as Noskova will not be competing at the Australian Open main draw.
This may seem strange given the fact that Noskova is ranked 56 in the world and proved her ranking by beating Daria Kasatkina, Victoria Azarenka and Ons Jabeur last week in Adelaide.
However when the entry list for the Australian Open came out six weeks ago, Noskova was ranked out of the cut-off and therefore had to go through qualifying.
There was a late wildcard available for Noskova after Venus Williams’ withdrawal however that place in the main draw went to Australian Jaimee Fourlis, who by contrast lost her Adelaide opener last week to Marta Kostyuk.
As for Sebov, by ranking it’s one of her biggest career victories and the 24 year-old’s reward is now a match against Priscilla Hon in the second qualifying round.
Mixed Day For Brits
Meanwhile for British players it was a mixed day with three players from six winning their opening qualifying round matches.
There was a great win for Lily Miyazaki as she defeated American Hailey Baptiste 6-4 7-5 to set up a match with Jang Su-Jeong of South Korea.
As well as Miyazaki there were also victories for Katie Boulter and Jodie Burrage over Caroline Dolehide and Elysia Bolton respectively.
Boulter will face Polina Kudermetova next while Burrage faces Barbora Palicova.
There were three defeats though with one of them being Liam Broady who lost a last set tiebreak to Emilio Gomez in a near three hour battle.
As well as Broady, Ryan Peniston and Katie Swan were also defeated to Alexis Galarneau and Jessika Ponchet respectively.
