Nick Kyrgios has hit back on social media at United Cup and Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt after comments made after Kyrgios’ withdrawal from the United Cup.
Kyrgios withdrew from the mixed team event as a precautionary measure ahead of the Australian Open.
The Wimbledon finalist has had a history of injuries and withdrew to ensure he heads into his home Grand Slam in the best shape possible.
However in the pre-event press conference Lleyton Hewitt criticised Kyrgios’ lack of communication over his withdrawal, “I was in the same boat as all the other players yesterday,” Hewitt was quoted as saying by The Age.
“I didn’t know anymore. It was pretty tough for everyone. It was more probably the lack of communication and these guys not knowing. I’m so proud of this bloke [de Minaur] and the effort and how he makes playing for his country a priority.
“It’s something I’m very proud of him. I think for the whole team it was pretty tough not knowing what was going on the last 24 hours.”
Hewitt was clearly frustrated at Kyrgios with the United Cup campaign starting 24 hours later.
However Kyrgios has now hit back at the former Grand Slam champion responding to Ajla Tomljanovic’s late withdrawal from her match with Harriet Dart.
It will be interesting to see the fallout as Kyrgios’ problems with Lleyton Hewitt continue.
In related news Australia began their United Cup campaign with defeat to Great Britain.
Despite the defeat their was a consolation victory for Jason Kubler over Dan Evans.
Australia will look to bounce back when they take on Spain on the 2nd and 3rd of January.
