Holger Rune has been named Newcomer of the Year of the 2022 ATP Awards after a very successful season. The 19-year-old Danish player won three ATP titles and reached the top 10 of the ATP Rankings for the first time in his career.
Rune won his first title at the BMW Open in Munich on clay last April just two days after turning 19. He beat Stefanos Tsitsipas to become the first Danish player to reach the quarter finalin tournament history.
He won 19 of his final 21 matches claiming two indoor titles in Stockolm and Paris Bercy. He also reached two finals finishing runner-up to Marc Andrea Huesler at the Sofia Open and Felix Auger Aliassime at the Swiss Open in Basel.
He beat Tsitsipas for the second time this season to claim the title in Stockolm.
The Scandinavian player crowned his breakthrough season with the biggest title of his career at the Masters 1000 tournament in Paris Bercy beating Novak Djokovic in the championships match. During the Paris Rolex Masters he beat five top 10 platers in a week (Hubert Hurkacz, Andrey Rublev, Carlos Alcaraz, Felix Auger Aliassime and Djokovic).
“I am feeling lovely, to be honest. It’s the best feeling. If you told me four weeks ago, I would be top 10, I would be like ‘What sorry ?’ Now I am here and here and I super proud”.
Jack Draper, Jiri Lehecka, Ben Shelton and Chun-Hsin Tseng were also nominated in the Newcomer of the Year category.
