Novak Djokovic’s wife Jelena has hit back at speculation over what the former world No.1 was drinking during the Paris Masters after a dubious video was posted on social media.
In a video that has gone viral, Djokovic’s team was seen shielding physio Ulises Badio as he prepared a drink for the 21-time Grand Slam champion. He poured a clear liquid substance, which was presumed to be water, into a yellow drinking bottle. It couldn’t be seen if anything else was added to the drink. It is common for players to drink powdered drinks during matches that contain electrolytes but the way Djokovic’s team made the drink has raised suspicion from some.
Jelena has commented on the video by insisting there was nothing ‘dodgy’ going on and said it was just a simple case of somebody ‘trying to be private about their business.’ Although it raises further questions as to why there was a need for such secrecy concerning a drink.
“I don’t see anything dodgy. In fact, I see people trying to be private about their business in a world where everyone feels like they have every right to point camera at you whenever they want. Apparently, wanting/trying to be private makes you dodgy nowadays.” Jelena wrote.
Challenged by one Twitter user about why Djokovic didn’t just say what he was drinking which would have quashed the speculation, she said he has a right to privacy and will speak about it when he wants to. There is no suggestion that the tennis star has consumed anything prohibited but it is very mysterious.
“He will talk when he is ready to talk. This whole nonsense about making people speak about something they are not ready because OTHERS are unpatient (sic) is absurd,” Jelena responded.
“Sit a bit in silence. Mind yourself more. Not everything you see is controversial. It could be private. Is that allowed?”
During this year’s Wimbledon Championships, Djokovic was seen inhaling from a bottle which he later described as a ‘magic potion.’ When quizzed by journalists he confirmed that it was a supplement he took with his drink but didn’t name what it was. The Telegraph newspaper speculated that the substance was isotonic powder and other players have been taking unmixed energy supplements. Although this was never officially confirmed.
Djokovic returns to action next week at the ATP Finals in Turin where he is seeking to get back to his winning ways after losing in the final of the Paris Masters to rising star Holder Rune on Sunday.
