Dominic Thiem keeps on gaining confidence after a 6-4 6-3 win over Francisco Cerundolo earned him a place in the Gijon semi-finals.

After playing a string of indoor hard court events, the former US Open champion is now reaping the rewards of match practice as he moved into the Gijon semi-finals.

Having already beaten Joao Sousa and Marcos Giron, Thiem defeated Francisco Cerundolo in straight sets to reach the last four.

The win was his 9th win of the indoor hard court swing having notched up wins in Rennes, Metz and Tel-Aviv.

Speaking after his win Thiem admits he is enjoying playing tennis after a poor start to his comeback from injury, “From the first match on, I have felt great on this court,” Thiem told the ATP website.

“A lot of control. A super nice atmosphere and I have enjoyed playing a lot since Monday. I am super happy that I am still in the tournament at the weekend and I can play another match.

“It is very important for me as I am trying to climb up the rankings. The semi-finals at an ATP [Tour] event is helping a lot.”

Thiem will now look to make his first ATP tour final of the season as he takes on Andrey Rublev in the last four.

Rublev defeated Tommy Paul 7-5 6-3 in what was a confidence-boosting win that will help his bid to try to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin.

The Russian currently leads their head-to-head 3-2 heading into Saturday’s semi-final showdown.

In the other two quarter-finals, Arthur Rinderknech will take on second seed Pablo Carreno Busta while Andy Murray will face talented American Sebastian Korda.
