Top-seed Andrey Rublev will headline the Gijon Open indoor court tournament, that also features Spanish stars Pablo Carreno Busta and Roberto Bautista Agut.
Eleven-time ATP titlist Rublev reached the quarter finals at the US Open before losing to Frances Tiafoe in three sets. The Russian player lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in three sets in the semifinals at the Astana Open last week. During the season Rublev won three titles in Dubai, Marseille and Belgrade, the quarter finals at Roland Garros, at the Madrid Open, the semifinals in Bastad and Washington. Rublev is currently sixth in the ATP Race to Turin.
Pablo Carreno Busta and Roberto Bautista Agut lead the Spanish charge. Carreno Busta won his first Masters 1000 title in Montreal last August beating Hubert Hurkacz in three sets and lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the Barcelona Open final.
Bautista Agut is aiming to win his ninth hard-court title and his first indoor tournamenent. This season he won the Kitzbuhel title and lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Mallorc final.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina reached the final at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters and reached the Round of 16 at the US Open, and the quarter finals in Hamburg, and Estoril.
Andy Murray is aiming his first title since his win in Antwerp in 2019. The two-time Olympic champion reached two finals in Sydney and Stuttgart. He will face a tough first round against Davidovich Fokina in their first ATP Tour head-to-head clash.
Dominic Thiem is returning to his best form after a wrist injury. The 2020 US Open champion has won his past six first round ATP Tour matches. He will open his campaign in Vienna against Portugal’s Joao Sousa. Thiem lost to Ugo Humbert at the ATP Challenger in Rennes and reached the semifinal in Gstaad and the quarter final in kitzbuhel this year.
Top seeds Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos are currently first in the doubles ATP Race to Turin and are aiming to qualify for the third conseucutive time. The Spanish and Argentine team won the ATP 500 title in Halle and the semifinals at Roland Garros, Hamburg and at the Astana Open.
Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini are currently ninth in the ATP Race to Turin and are aiming to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals as a doubles team for the second time in their career. Rafael Matos and David Vega Hernandez are aiming to qualify for their second consecutive final after finishing runner-up in Tokyo last week.
