Andrey Rublev edged out Dominic Thiem 6-4 6-4 to reach the Gijon final and move closer to ATP Finals qualification.
The Russian was ruthless as he neutralised the returning Austrian to seal a straight sets win and move into the final in Gijon.
Tomorrow will see Rublev chase his fourth ATP title of the season as he looks set to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin.
Speaking after his victory in Spain Rublev admitted he was lucky but is pleased to be in another final, “When I was winning 4-1 with a break point for 5-1 it looks like the match is going my way and then I am at 5-4 with him serving,” the Russian told the ATP website.
“That’s not easy to accept, but I was lucky I played a really good game and Dominic helped me out a little bit. Then I felt more confident and I was able to win in two sets, which was the most important thing.
“This week I have been playing really well and I’ll try to show my best tennis of the week tomorrow.”
Rublev will now face talented American Sebastian Korda in Sunday’s showpiece event after Korda defeated Arthur Rinderknech 7-6(2) 6-3.
Korda backed up his three set win over Andy Murray with a phenomenal serving display, saving all three break points that he faced.
After the match Korda admitted he is excited for the final on Sunday, “It was a really good match that came down to a couple of games here and there,” Korda told the ATP website.
“I’ve very, very happy and excited for tomorrow. It’s going to be very difficult, but I’m ready to go.”
Rublev currently leads their head-to-head 1-0 having won their only meeting in Miami last year in a tight straight sets victory.
