US Open semifinalist Frances Tiafoe will represent the World Team at the fifth edition of the Laver Cup at the O2 Arena in London from 23 to 23 September.
Tiafoe played in the inaugural edition of the Laver Cup in Prague in 2017 and in Chicago 2018. He will make his third appearance at this event. The US player of African origin will replace his compatriot John Isner, who suffered from a wrist injury at the US Open.
Tiafoe upset Rafael Nadal in the fourth round at the US Open before beating Andrey Rublev in straight sets in the quarter final before losing to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set semifinal. Tiafoe achieved the longest run by an American player at the US Open since 2006.
Tiafoe will join Felix Auger Aliassime, Taylor Fritz, Diego Schwartzman, Alex De Minaur and Jack Sock in the Team World captained by John McEnroe.
“I just proved I am capable of winning Grand Slams. It’s an incredible event and I hope I can win points for Team World in London this year. I know what to expect and I think we have a great chance this year of taking the title from Team Europe”, said Tiafoe.
Tiafoe claimed his first ATP Tour title in Delray Beach in 2018 at the age of 20. One year later he beat Grigor Dimitrov to reach his first Grand Slam quarter final at the 2019 Australian Open.
