Serena Williams is set to play her final US Open by possibly wearing one of the most stylish outfits of her entire career.

The outfit has been designed by the 23-time Grand Slam champion in partnership with Nike and represents a variety of things. Williams will be wearing a six-layer skirt to symbolize the six US Open titles she has won in her career. The crystal-encrusted bodice alludes to the night sky at the tournament. Ironically the design has been inspired by another sport, figure skating.

“Inspired by graceful competition dresses worn by figure skaters, the embellished bodice and the skirt place Serena in the spotlight and allow her freedom of movement,” a Nike press release reads.

On her feet, the 40-year-old will be wearing custom-made PE NikeCourt Flare 2 trainers. They will feature a diamond-encrusted Swoosh, along with solid gold lace deubrés. This has been created in collaboration with Serena Williams Jewelry. Her initials will be on the back of her shoes.

It is widely expected that Flushing Meadows will be the last tournament Williams plays before retiring. In an article written for Vogue, she said she was starting to ‘evolve’ away from the sport but never stated where she will play her final match. In New York, she is also playing in the doubles draw alongside sister Venus Williams.

Williams will play her first round match on Monday evening against Danka Kovinic. She has never lost her opening match at the tournament in 20 appearances and currently holds the Open Era record for most matches won by a female player. Her win-loss record currently stands at 106-14.
