Denis Shapovalov is into the second round of the US Open after outlasting Swiss qualifier Marc Andrea Huesler who was playing in only his second match in a grand slam main draw.

The Toronto native was able to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 in two hours and 57 minutes. Serving 13 aces and winning 80% of his first serve points in his first match since reuniting with his old coach Mikhail Youzhny.

“It was a super tough match but I am happy to get the win and honestly it was just a battle out there.” Said Shapovalov.

To the Canadian’s surprise it was the Swiss who got off to the better start by getting the early break to take a 2-0 lead and at 5-2 broke the number 19 seed again to seal the first set.

Shapovalov, who seemed frustrated throughout the entire first set, managed to turn it around in the second by grabbing the crucial break of serve at 4-4 and served out the set to even the match.

Motivated by winning the second set Shapovalov used the momentum and at 1-1 he set up two breakpoints with a stunning backhand passing shot and broke to take a 2-1 lead. That one break of serve was all the Canadian needed to take a two-to-one set lead.

The fourth set was a tight affair as both players did a good job holding serve until 4-3 when the qualifier managed to get the break after a poor service game from Shapovalov. Huesler managed to serve out the fourth set and send the match into a winner take all fifth set.

Again motivated to turn it around the Toronto native held his opening service game in the decider and the following game using his powerful yet beautiful one-handed backhand broke to a take 2-0 lead. It stayed on serve again until 4-1 when the Canadian capitalized on one of his two breakpoints in the game and served out the match to the delight of his fans on Court 10.

After the match Shapovalov gave full credit to his opponent who gave him a good go for his money.

“He was serving really well but it’s a huge confidence booster to win a match like this and I was happy I was able to turn it around in the second set”. He said.

Shapovalov will now either face the winner of the match between two Spaniards Jaume Munar and Roberto Carballes Baena.
