Matteo Berrettini came back from one set down to beat Pedro Martinez 3-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-1 reaching the semifinal at the EFG Swiss Open in Gstaad.
Martinez earned his first break in the fourth game. The Spaniard held his next service games and served out the first set at deuce after saving a break point.
Berrettini saved two break points in the first game of the second set, which went on serve until the tie-break.
Berrettini went down 1-5 in the tie-break, but he won six consecutive games to seal the second set.
Berrettini broke three times to win the third set 6-1.
“Sometimes it is just tennis. It is a crazy sport. At 1-5 I thought I was done. Then I played two good points and it was 3-5 and I thought ‘let’s try.’- I don’ think I played my best match here. It is important to win when you are not playing well. I managed to find some energy inside me. I am really to be through”, said Berrettini.
Berrettini set up a semifinal match against Dominic Thiem, who beat Peruvian qualifier PJuan Pablo Varillas 6-4 6-3. Berrettini leads 3-2 in his five head-to-head matches against Thiem.
“Dominic has had an unbelievable career. He is a Slam champion and got injured, but he is coming back. I saw some of him today and his level is coming back, so it going to be a tough match. We always play great matches, so tomorrow will be a good one”, said Berrettini.
